About

A Biological Sciences undergraduate preparing, step by step, for a life in medicine and research.

Academic path

Iskandar Nasirli is an undergraduate at Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, working toward a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in Health & Medicine. He expects to graduate in May 2029.

His current coursework builds the foundations of the life sciences: human genetics and bioethics, biology and chemistry, each paired with laboratory work.

Current coursework

  • Human Genetics & Bioethics
  • Essentials of Biology
  • Essentials of Biology Lab
  • Essentials of Chemistry
  • Essentials of Chemistry Lab

First clinical steps

In the summer of 2023 he completed a pre-medical internship at Leyla Medical Center in Baku, Azerbaijan. Under supervision, he trained in basic clinical techniques and observed attending surgeons during liver surgery and reconstructive plastic surgery.

How he approaches science

He is drawn to questions that can be answered with evidence. He values careful observation, quantitative thinking and the discipline of checking an idea against data before trusting it.

Looking ahead

His long-term interests lie in cardiovascular biology and neuroscience, and he hopes to pursue medicine with a focus on cardiology and, eventually, cardiothoracic surgery. These are goals he is working toward, not milestones already reached.

Beyond the laboratory

Outside the sciences he reads classical Azerbaijani and Eastern literature, including Nizami Ganjavi and Aliağa Vahid, and takes a serious interest in philosophy and art.
